Photo AlbumLast Abstract Painting Class!!May 29, '06 11:45 PM
for everyone
Yes this is our last abstract painting class on Sun 28 May '06. Quite sad really I was looking forward to painting on sundays. Will have to go on our own now. I will still paint at home when I get time I suppose.

May look into taking Mixed media course or oil painting will see. Once I start my new job June 13 I dun thk I will have enough time for myself let alone paint hehe

Anyway, we have Tania for our last class and it is great to have a total different perspective. We started with an outdoor sketching experience which is fun! We brought along sketching paper and canvas and pencils and sat on the bench surrounded with trees and plants of many species. I took some pics to illustrate the area we were in. It is really hard for me to get away from represenational art. When Im placed in front of a tree or plant, I tend to draw the details and interesting parts. As I drew my sketches on canvas, it is hard to paint something entirely different or creative I guess. So I wasn't really happy with my paintings on sun :( After the nature sketch we went on to architecture sketch. Again I took some pics to illustrate the buildings I chose to draw. Again it is hard to do an architectural abstract painting for me. Tania showed us some famous american and australian artists; of which some uses geometrical shapes when illustrating certain landscapes etc. I was attracted by the painting done by Kandinsky and decided to do my painting in very colourful way. I did all shades of purple which is cool blue and red, warm blue and red and also mixing with white. It ended up looking abit kindergarten-ish really but I guess I could finish it up properly.

I got to know more about colours when Tania shows us the colour wheel and tells us more about mixing colours. She encouraged us to use 2 colours in our painting by varying the tones and shades by mixing with white, gray and black. When I started mixing all the different shades, I realise how hard it must be for artists to mix the exact colour they want and in different shades too.

I got everyone together to take a group pic and hopefully everyone stays in contact. I also did one group pic with playful violet background which I think is fun. I love vibrant colours!

Take care all and please stay in contact!

Bern
xoxo

Yeah I love bright colours! I realised how hard it is to mix and blend all the different tone of colours!

Thanks! I didnt realise green is such a difficult colour to mix and also paint hehe

Yeah, that is probably the 2nd most critical part of the art of painting - mixing tones...so are you working w/ oils?

Really?? Green?? Is it a particular shade?

I kinda like this one...  Is this a result of the overlapping of colorshades, or just different colors for each closed section?

No Im using acrylics. I would love to learn how to paint in oil next. The colours are more vibrant. But I guess acrylics is more versatile and easier to clean hehehe

yeah I cant seem to get the tone I want and also hard to paint it with complimentary colours to make it look nice hehe

Oh this is actually my friend Michele's work. She is very talented. Thats her abstract painting after our outdoor lesson of sketching nature so I suppose those would be her interpretation of tree, branches and leaves etc hehehe

OK, that makes sense....I actually don't like painting w/ acrylics because they change colors after they dry....even though oils and water colors are harder to work w/, at least they stay the colors your paint...

Yes. thats what I found too...
I loved some of the colours I painted on when its wet and the colours change when it dries, u never know what you get

I will try to go on an oil painting class sometime. I have never worked with oil paints.
Then again Im so busy working nowadays will have to find some time to do it!

Yeah, the color changing thing is the worst part of working w/ acrylics...I have some paintings I did & actually, they look alright, but the colored are not as bright as when I first painted them....actually they were meant for ceramics but I had them around the house so I used them for canvas....they still look ok but I would have liked to use oils....

You will have to have patience w/ oils. I know people who work w/ them & it's VERY time consuming, BUT then again, they are as bright and vibrant as the day you put the paint down....Van Gogh is the perfect example....THOSE are vibrant colors & probably look very similar to the day he painted them in the first place...

Post what you do next, definitely....

Please do...also, are you working on sculpture at all? I would think you'd be good w/ pottery or some sort of utilitarian 3D work....

Actually speaking of that, I had always wanted to make my own plate, bowl or vase. Theres actually somewhere near my place where you can make your own and paint and they provide everything. Will definitely do it one of these days.

Ah yes, Im also quite excited about an article about me coming out soon with the Macquarie community college's next semester's brochure. The college is where I took my abstract painting course. Will post it here when I get sent a copy hehe

Yeah, they have places our here called Color Me Mine where they do just what you said. You paint stuff they have & they fire it and give it back...some very nice things....they have many Color Me Mines out here...but I would think you could actually throw the clay on a pottery wheel & make your own....hmmmm?

& yes, please share the article....are they featuring you and your paintings?

OK, well it sounded familiar but I didn't know that they were in other countries...so now we both know... ;-)

& Happy Birthday!! That is a nice Birthday gift, although their choice of paintings sounds like it could leave something to be desired...please, show the article as it's cool that you are featured...right?

Yes she is very good. I knew her from the class actually.
I did this abstract painting class May last year which is only over 3 sundays. Wow it has been a year since I did the course. Time flies!
I did the oil painting class over 2 saturdays which is Nov last year and I did
the Collage course in Jan for over one weekend sat and sun.
We did the ceramics Oct last year and we also did a lampwork beads class last year in Nov. Cant really show the beads cos the 1st beads I ever made were lost in the post :(
I think we did a Japanese card making course in April and thats the newest course we took.
I cant seem to find the pics but will post when I do haha
We were thinking of taking a mixed media course but just missed one so will see when the next one comes up hehe

Yes, she is very good...it sounds like you've take a whole lot of classes..You must have a lot of works that you've done over all those classes....have you shown most of them here? I remember beads that I think you did last year....what about the ceramics or Japanese card....sounds like you've done a lot of good stuff to show....

Also, do you have a favorite medium by now?

Yeah I have added a pic of her paintings hung up in her living room in the other album " Painting at Michelle's" hehe looks cool doesnt it?

Ah those beads werent the beads I used to make jewellery.
The lampwork beads course I did was me learning how to make beads as in using glass and fire and melting it onto spandrels hehehehe yes its a pity the parcel of my 1st beads made never reached me :( But I will sort out the pics I took during the class when I get time.

I have posted the ceramics I did from colourmemine if you remember.

I will post my handmade japanese cards when I get time. I even sold one to my colleague cos he liked it so much. He sent it to his mum for mother's day hehehe Sold for A$5 hehehe maybe I should start a biz selling the handmade cards. I will post them when I get time. See if you like any of my designs hehee

Painting wise my favourite medium is acrylic just purely the ease of use. Colours wise oil is the most true and vibrant but difficult to wash off my hands and not easy to mix and get the right colour u want. I have not tried water colour since I was in high school hahaha maybe I should get into it again and see if I like it.

I love craft stuff but Im not into knitting funny that. But I do like making jewellery, cards, craft stuff etc

Yeah, both you and Michelle are very good....so you lost some of your beads...yes, that's a pity...Did they not turn out in the kiln?

& yes, I do remember the Color Me Mine ceramics...it's been a while....apparently, you've not gone back & made more...They have those out here but I have yet to get out there and make something...in the next few months for sure & I'll definitely post pictures.

& yes, it sounds like oils are the most difficult to work with but also the most vibrant....watercolors are very deceiving because when you first get them, they don't look like much, BUT I've seen some of the most realistic representational paintings done w/ watercolors...I swear, they look like photos....maybe take a class specifically on using them because I think you'll be surprised....

So you don't knit? With all the other things you do, I don't think it really matters...unless you're really cold & need a sweater.. ;-)

The beads did come out of the kiln. It got lost when being delivered to me. Apparently someone in my building signed for it and it wasnt me. They tried contacting the post office and theres nothing they can do about it. Shame, I had a few nice big beads which I was intending to make into a pendant with necklace. Well I just have to do another course.

Yes I might try out watercolour painting but that will be after my trip.
I will be away for 3 weeks.
